interview with Tenebras (guitar, vocals) by SEB WOOd
SEB WOOd : Can you introduce yourself and tell us briefly the story of Nuit Noire ??
Tenebras: I'm Tenebras, I created Nuit Noire in summer 1997. My brother had played the drums for 6 years with me. He left the band in 2003 because of a big disagreement about my voice. Now I'm alone on the recordings and a friend of mine will play the drums on stage. We have released 6 demo tapes, one 7" and an album.
Swd: Lunar Deflagration was released almost anonymously; there is no contact whatsoever in the cd sleeve. Why did you do it this way ??
Tenebras: Creatures of the night live far in the forest. They have neither postal address nor e-mails.
Swd: What was recording the album like ??
Tenebras: I began to play the drums, then the guitars, then the voice. That took about 4 hours. But the mix took about 2 weeks. I just used an analog 8-track recorder. I used my computer to do the mastering.
Swd: In my opinion, Nuit Noire is a crossover between old-school black metal and old-school punk rock. Do you agree with this statement ??
Tenebras: Even if this way of sounding is not really intentional, you are right. It describes well the music of Nuit Noire.
Swd: I know you've been mainly playing with metal bands and apparently belong to the metal scene. To which extent do you consider it true ??
Tenebras: Almost all the fans are black metallers, but I have never considered my music as black metal. I have always listened to metal since the age of 12, so I know a huge quantity of metallers and, also, Nuit Noire has always evolved in the metal scene. I also play the drums in Metal Fire and Grimoria.
Swd: I heard you've been classified as Faerie Metal. Can you explain exactly what it means ??
Tenebras: Nuit Noire is like a great black forest in which fairies stay hidden from the human world. The guitar sound, the melodies, the voice and the lyrics are filled with the faerical fluid of the night and the drums are very fast and frantic. That's why I have called it "faerie metal".
Swd: The 'faerie' theme seems to be the unifying theme in ‘Lunar Deflagration’. Is the album a concept album ??
Tenebras: The "faerie" theme is the unifying theme of Nuit Noire. It has always been conducted by that and it will forever be.
Swd: Why have you picked up this title??
Tenebras: This album is like a powerful flow of moonlight hitting your ears and making your mind bathe in "faerie". "Lunar deflagration" was THE title to represent that.
Swd: And now, stupid questions:
What's the most stupid thing you've ever done ??
Tenebras: When I was a child, I proudly ate a whole prawn: its flesh, its head, its eyes, its shell, its legs... all in front of a big part of my family. More recently, I jumped naked in a nettle field.
Swd: What's your favourite chord ??
Tenebras: I don't even know their names!
Swd: What freaks the hellllll out of you ??
Tenebras: Creatures of the night have no fears.
Swd: How do you look like in a tuxedo ??
Tenebras: I prefer not knowing.
Swd: What becomes of the broken-hearted ??
Tenebras: They jump nude in nettle fields.

Tenebras: I don't even need to say anything!

Tenebras: Elvira.

Tenebras: Not on me.

Tenebras: A french word from Groland that traumatized me: "CHIASSARD!".
